6/12/2017 2 Comments How to Deal With Hornet NestsDid you notice some hornets hovering over your yard? It is possible that there is a hornets nest nearby!
To most people, hornets are any kind of large insect that look ferocious and give stinging bites. In reality, there are about 20 species of true hornets found worldwide but only one species is found in the United States which is the European hornets. This introduced species measures approximately 1-1.5 inches long, has two pairs of wings, and six legs. It prefers to build nests above the ground -- in tree holes, porches, attics, and under roof eaves. Contrary to the belief of the many, baldfaced hornets are not “true hornets.” They look like larger version of a yellowjacket. They prefer to make their nests in tree branches and thick bushes. What to Do When You Found A Hornets Nest If you found a hornets' nest, DO NOT DISTURB IT. Hornets are known to attack invaders and sting as a form of defense. Some people are sensitive to stings and need to be extra careful when in areas known to have hornets and other stinging insects. Some people spray certain kinds of aerosols to the nest during nighttime to kill the hornets. This is a good timing because all colony members have returned to the nest. Treating the nest is a good measure to ensure that the nest will not be rebuilt by the remaining hornets. Think twice before removing hornet nests by yourself from your property. The nature of this insect makes the job extra challenging so it is better to let the pest control experts deal with it. Schedule the removal during the earlier months of the year since the hornets population is not that high yet and they are not aggressive during that time of the year.
