7/31/2018 9 Comments Tips to Avoid Termite InfestationTermites, causes one of the most destructive pests infestation there is. It really is hard when you have a termite infestation in your home, because most of the time, especially when the infestation has just started, they damage your home silently. Most of the time we don’t see them especially the ones inside your walls or roofs. We are most likely to discover a termite infestation when they have greatly damaged a structure in your home, and by that, it means they already have been infesting your home for a long time. Termites eat more than just wood, they like to eat anything made of plants or trees, especially rotten ones, some also were discovered eating plastics.
Termites eat not as quick as you think, a large colony could consume 1 pound of wood a day, it may seem small but what if you’ve got a very large colony in your home? It may have consumed more than just a pound. An average termite colony consists of 60,000 to 1,000,000 termites. That’s a lot for one colony, but what if you’ve got a huge colony now? Additionally, given the fact that they don’t sleep, and they work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, most of their work is eating. Which really is a bad thing. Given all these facts, these tiny insects are really one of the most destructive and dangerous pest infestations to have. That’s why you have to make sure your home is free of termites. Below are tips to avoid termite infestation. Get rid of moisture in your home Termites love moist areas, avoid moisture in your home, especially in the outdoors, termites live underground outdoors, so when you have moisture outside your home, that will attract termites that would eventually lead them to start an infestation in your home. So how do you get rid of moistures, make sure you don’t have leaking pipes, check your plumbing system. Make sure your roof drainage has no leaks too and disposes stormwater correctly. Check your home of damages Check your home if you have damages like holes, cracks, or any kind of openings. Check the walls, windows, and roofs. These openings are gateways for termites to enter your home. If you were able to locate an opening, have it repaired immediately. Hire a pest control Hiring a pest control is not just hiring them to exterminate a current infestation, you can hire them to inspect your house if you already have a termite infestation, you could also hire them to apply pest protection in your home. Hire a pest control from time to time, to inspect your home do it frequently, but regarding the types of furniture inside your home, you can do it by yourself. Another advice is, when your home is still under construction, hire a pest control to apply termite proofing in your house. Get rid of woods around your home Get rid of woods or papers around your home especially outdoors, I’m not talking about furniture or items, get rid of woods you don’t use, and garbages like papers, they would most likely consume them and eventually, it would lead them to your house.

Good advice about termites, which are a huge problem for us on the west coast as well. One of our problems is that our most common termite is subterranean, which means they're much harder to notice, track and prevent. So your third point, hiring a professional, is particular poignant. Thanks!

I never thought about hiring a pest control service every once in a while to avoid termite infestations. We recently moved to a new home, and I am afraid of the termites because our house is mostly made out of wood. These are good tips, and I will make sure to talk to a professional service in my area to come to take a look at my house.

It was interesting to read that termites prefer moist areas. It rains a lot where I live and it's tough keeping the house dry. I might have to call a pest control professional to see if I've got termites in my house if that's what they prefer!

Thanks for explaining how cracks, holes, and any openings can let termites inside the home where they can start an infestation. My cousin just bought a home in a new neighborhood and she isn't sure how safe the home is from bugs. I think that hiring a professional to check for any cracks or holes like you mentioned could be really useful and prevent any possible damage.
